Cheerio, Jackals! As you may well know, Great Britain is the birthplace of some great bands, some great royals, and some great podcasts, including those hosted by newly christened 5by5 host, and all-around friendly chap, Myke Hurley. Recently we sat down for tea with Mr. Hurley to chat him up and discuss the acquisition of his network, 70Decibels, by 5by5, his corporate stoogedom, a new podcast he's co-hosting, and all of the well-battered fun he's having at WWDC this week.
Ay up, Myke! How’s it going?
Myke Hurley: It's going pretty well today, thank you. I'm in sunny San Francisco for WWDC at the moment, having an absolute blast! It's nice to hear from you, 5by5 blog. I trust you are well?
Very well, thank you! For those who aren't in the know, tell us a bit about yourself.
MH: I'm Myke Hurley, newly ensconced podcaster at 5by5!
Where do you hail from, Sir Myke?
MH: I am from London, in merry old England. Hopefully I'll be bringing some british charm to the network.
Rightio! Tell us about your network, 70Decibels, and the individual shows you host such as CMD+Space, Bionic, Pen Addict, and the News.
MH: So, I started 70Decibels in October of 2011, having been podcasting since April 2010. I had amassed a stable of around 10 shows over that period—many of which I am a host of. In March of 2013, 70Decibels was acquired by 5by5 and we have recently started moving all of the shows over to our new home.
At the time of writing we have moved over CMD+SPACE—which is my weekly interview show with awesome people from the internet, Bionic—a show dedicated to looking at technology and media ecosystems, outside of the world of Apple and The Pen Addict—A show for the pen and paper geeks of the world. The rest of our shows will be moving over to 5by5 in the coming weeks and we have some cool surprises in store too!
Also – since the acquisition – I have taken the reins of The News on 5by5. Every day I amass links (with the help of the lovely Danielle) to discuss on the show. We try to focus on Tech, gaming and geek news—typically between 5-10 minutes.
What inspired you to start a podcast?
MH: I have always loved creating things and struggled to find the right creative outlet. Until one day, during a conversation about Apple news with one of my best friends, we decided to start a podcast together. The medium really stuck for me and I just love doing it.
How did the 70Decibels and 5by5 merger come about?
MH: Me and Dan have been speaking about this for a long time. We first had conversations about doing this in June of 2012, but decided that it might be worth holding off for a bit. We kept in good contact and continued working together on some things. In November of 2012 we had a call and agreed that the time was right.
I was and am honoured to be a part of 5by5 and I'm really happy that Dan wanted me to be a part of what he's built.
What do you do outside of hosting your shows?
MH: As well as the behind the scenes stuff with podcasting – like arranging guests, dealing with admin and producing some other shows – I actually work a corporate stooge job.
I have a regular 9-5, working in Marketing for a large finance company. It gets a bit tough to balance at times, but podcasting is what I really love to do and I have dreams that I'll be able to kick my corporate stooge job to the curb in 2013.
Crikey! You'll have to be a guest on QUIT!™ when you finally take the leap. What are your interests outside of work and podcasting?
MH: I'm a geek.
For me, this means; video games, movies, cartoons and comic books.
What projects are you working on?
MH: Well this is a big question. I am always working on new projects—it's like an addiction. I have some new shows that I would like to create, a few of them are in very early stages of development and would be quite tough to pull off, but I hope to have at least one of these up and running within the next few months.
I do have a pretty cool project that is launching next week on 5by5. It's a natural extension of one of the shows we had on 70Decibels, but with a new twist. It's called The Prompt and will feature myself, Stephen Hackett and Federico Viticci, covering the culture of Apple and related companies. We're also going to be bringing in friends and listeners as 'correspondents' to help us cover some cool topics.
What are you most looking forward to this summer?
MH: WWDC! Whilst I am technically experienceing this right now, I still have a couple of days to go in town. I have met with some amazing friends and listeners as well as a bunch of people I really look up to. Also, it's pretty cool to be able to break bread with Mr. Benjamin.
Last night we had Jim Dalrymple's Beard Bash, which was an absolute blast. I have a bit sore head today, but it's all worth it. There may be some videos floating around of me singing Wonderwall by Oasis.
The generous Stephen Hackett shared a snippet of Myke's performance with us.
The party was full of people from the 5by5 family and lead to this amazing photo of myself, Merlin and couple of A-grade jackals.
I also would love to come out to Austin to visit with all the 5by5 folk this year. We just need to get some dates on the calendar.
What are you reading this summer?
MH: Tech blogs and comic books. I'm not much of a reader, I've always struggled to keep my concentration with books. I think that's why I create podcasts and not write a blog.
What movies are you most looking forward to this summer?
To name just a few..
Great list! Simon Pegg's crew just keeps churning out hilarious films. Where can we find you on the internet?
And of course, podcasting daily at 5by5!
Thanks, Myke! Have a great rest of your stay in San Francisco. We hope you'll make it out to the 5by5 Studios soon!
MH: Thanks 5by5 Blog!
